How to read public domain sales reports (and why most deals are missing)

DNJournal, NamePros and NameBio are great research tools, as long as you know their limits.

If you're trying to figure out what a domain is worth, public sales data is the best place to start. A few sources are widely used:

  • DNJournal publishes a bi-weekly sales report and running year-to-date Top 100 charts by extension group.
  • NamePros is a large domain community forum where sales are often reported and discussed.
  • NameBio is a searchable database of historical reported sales.
  • Domain Name Wire covers industry news and regularly reports sales from marketplaces.

Limits to keep in mind

  • NDAs: DNJournal itself notes that many seven-figure deals go unreported because of NDAs.
  • Gross vs. net: the same sale can be reported as the seller's net or the buyer's total. DNJournal revised Commerce.com from $2.2M to $2,444,000 for exactly this reason.
  • Comparables aren't price tags: length, extension, meaning and buyer demand all matter.
