How domain transfers work

Push vs. auth-code transfers, and what you need to do.

There are two common ways to move a domain to you:

Push (same registrar)

If you already have an account at the registrar where the domain is held, we can move it straight into your account. This is usually the fastest option. Just give us your account username or ID.

Authorization code (different registrar)

  1. We unlock the domain and send you the authorization (EPP) code.
  2. You start a transfer at your registrar and paste in the code.
  3. Approve any confirmation emails your registrar sends you.

A registrar-to-registrar transfer usually includes one year of renewal, paid at your registrar.

Transfer locks

Under ICANN's Transfer Policy, a domain may be locked against moving to another registrar for 60 days after certain events, for example a recent registration or a change of registrant (some registrars let you opt out). If that applies, we'll push it within the registrar or wait out the lock, and keep you informed.
