The Domain Name Industry Brief (DNIB) for the second quarter of 2026, published on July 23, 2026, reports 401.6 million domain registrations across all top-level domains. That is up 9.1 million (2.3%) from the previous quarter and 29.9 million (8.1%) from a year earlier.
Key numbers
- .com: 166.6 million registrations; .net: 12.5 million (179.1 million combined, up 5.1% year over year).
- New .com/.net registrations in the quarter: 12.7 million, compared with 10.4 million in Q2 2025.
- ccTLDs: 148.6 million registrations. The top 10 were .cn, .de, .uk, .ru, .nl, .br, .fr, .au, .in and .eu.
The previous report, for Q1 2026, recorded 392.5 million registrations.
What it means
More registrations mean fewer short, memorable names are left unregistered. That is a big part of why good existing names keep trading on the aftermarket.
